Launching you smoothly into Departmental IT facilities
Last Updated: September 2024
After registering:
You should have two passwords.
- A password for the UIS (University Information Services).
- A password for the Central Department of Engineering System.
You will be prompted to reset the UIS password that was provided to you at the end of the registration process. If you don’t reset your UIS password various facilities (email, etc) will not be available to you.
You don’t need to reset your Engineering password, but should you forget it information on how to reset it follows.
Before resetting either password it is advisable to check out the UIS guidance on choosing a strong, unique, and memorable password first.
Resetting your password:
- UIS – your initial UIS password will last forever, but you will not be able to access important facilities like email if you don’t reset it. There is an online password reset facility at https://password.raven.cam.ac.uk/ You can also check here if you have reset your password, under the “History” tab.
- Engineering – You don’t need to change your password after registration. However, if you have forgotten your Engineering password, you can reset it with your UIS password by changing your Engineering password remotely.
The Engineering Department helpdesk can provide help with resetting either password.
For added security, facilities accessed by your UIS password are also protected by Multi-Factor Authentication (MFA). It is recommended to set up multiple methods for accessing MFA in case one becomes unavailable. For example, if you change your phone the Microsoft Authenticator app will not transfer to your new device. However, if you keep the same phone number, you can still use MFA through text or phone.
IT Facilities Overview
At the Department of Engineering, your IT facilities are provided by different teams:
UIS – The Central University Information Service (used throughout the University and colleges).
Engineering Central IT support – Central facilities provided within the Department
Engineering Research IT support – provided within your Division. As you are probably aware the Department of Engineering is divided into six research areas, also known as Divisions A-F.
The following guide is designed to get you started. Unless otherwise stated, helpdesk@eng.cam.ac.uk will be your first line of support for the following facilities.
Wireless networks
A number of wifi options are shown:
Eduroam is the preferred option for almost all users.
UniOfCam-Guest we suggest you use this to set up Eduroam.
CUED is available to staff and postgraduate students of the Department of Engineering only. It is for a specific use and has to be applied for separately.
See the UIS new starters guide for information on setting up Eduroam.
All new users are given an ExchangeOnline email account.
See the UIS starters’ guide for information on setting up/accessing your ExchangeOnline email.
Remote working
Your Research IT support, PI or manager will be able to provide you with details of your desktop computer/research group server. Your Research IT support should provide you with specific instructions to connect if not covered by the generic Departmental remote access web pages.
File storage and sharing
Some facilities are run by the UIS, and some by the Department. For more information see our overview.
Valuable data should be stored in more than one location
UIS Desktop services
All new staff and visitors are given access to the UIS Desktop Services, so those facilities are available to you. However, when it comes to Desktop Services our default is our bespoke systems and not those at the UIS. Your Research IT support will be able to advise you.
Staff and student information
We have a staff and student directory page which contains links to contact information for staff and research students; plus undergraduate lists with lab groups.
Staff are given a profile page, and except for a few details held on our internal database staff can update their profile. To amend your name, academic division, telephone number, or cammail address contact the office that handled your contract:
research-office@eng.cam.ac.uk | For all short term contract research staff and academic visitors |
hr-office@eng.cam.ac.uk | For all academic/academic related and assistant staff |
Printing/copying/scanning in the Department
See the Departmental pages for information about printing, copying, and scanning within the Department.
Departmental Online Sales
