Undergraduates
Undergraduates can use the SRCF to publish web pages for themselves and/or for clubs and societies.
Staff and postgraduates
If they have given their consent, staff and PhD students are listed in the directory of people on the main Departmental web site, and they will have a profile page created showing basic information about them, with a URL along the lines of http://www.eng.cam.ac.uk/profiles/crsid – where crsid is their user id e.g. abc21. Staff and postgraduates can add further information about their work by editing their profile pages.
If you are a member of staff or PhD student, and you do not appear in the Department’s web site directory, the most likely reason is that you have not given consent for your details to be published. Contact the Department’s IT Helpdesk to let them know that you would like to appear.
Staff and postgraduates who want to publish personal web pages can use the SRCF.
Research groups, Divisions and courses
The University is currently going through a major redevelopment of its digital presence. While that work is in progress, the UIS offers only limited support for groups/Divisions/courses who would like to build a new web site.
You can request a new web site hosted by the UIS, but you will need to make a case that your content cannot reasonably be hosted on any existing site. You should complete the request form yourself. At the same time, please contact the IT Helpdesk to discuss the domain name (URL) for your site.
If the UIS will not provide you with a new site, or if you prefer the flexibility of an externally hosted site, the UIS recommends local provider Mythic Beasts. Mythic Beasts can also assist with using Raven to control access to your site, and with the use of cam.ac.uk names. Enquiries to sales@mythic-beasts.com .)
Both UIS and Mythic Beasts sites can be allocated a domain name (URL) within eng.cam.ac.uk.
Inter-disciplinary and inter-departmental groups
For some groups and initiatives that involve more than one Department, a name within eng.cam.ac.uk may not be appropriate. The obvious alternative would be a name at the next level up, within cam.ac.uk, but such names are not normally available. The domain group.cam.ac.uk has been created for such purposes, and it is normally straightforward to obtain a name in that domain. For details, see the UIS information about domain names. Once you have obtained a domain name for your group, it will be possible to use it for a website using any of the Research group services mentioned above.
