Undergraduates can use the SRCF to publish web pages for themselves and/or for clubs and societies.
Staff and postgraduates
If they have given their consent, staff and postgraduate students are listed in the directory of people on the main Departmental web site, and they will have a profile page created showing basic information about them, with a URL along the lines of http://www.eng.cam.ac.uk/profiles/crsid – where crsid is their user id e.g. abc21. Staff and postgraduates can add further information about their work by editing their profile pages.
If you are a member of staff or postgraduate student, and you do not appear in the Department’s web site directory, the most likely reason is that you have not given consent for your details to be published. Contact the Department’s IT Helpdesk to let them know that you would like to appear.
Staff and postgraduates who want to publish personal web pages can use the SRCF.
Research groups and Divisions
The UIS offers website development services and provides content management systems for institutions’ websites, research groups throughout the University. Services available include:
- Falcon – a templated, easy-to-use service that provides all of the formatting and house style, together with useful tools for creating group and conference web sites
- Drupal – a templated service, but with more flexibility than Falcon for those with the skills to use it
- Managed web service – the equivalent of buying commercial hosting: it provides administrative access to a dedicated virtual machine with web server software installed. This provides maximum flexibility for groups with the skills to develop their own web sites from scratch.
All of these services can be set up to have a URL within eng.cam.ac.uk.
Inter-disciplinary and inter-departmental groups
For some groups and initiatives that involve more than one Department, a name within eng.cam.ac.uk may not be appropriate. The obvious alternative would be a name at the next level up, within cam.ac.uk, but such names are not normally available. The domain group.cam.ac.uk has been created for such purposes, and it is normally straightforward to obtain a name in that domain. For details, see the UIS information about domain names.
