Changing your password

This page is for setting and changing your password on the Engineering Department Central Computing System. This password is used for a variety of systems including, but not limited to:

Windows PCs on the Department’s ‘AD’ domain
The teaching system
The Papercut printing/scanning/copying system.
Remote access via the gateway machine gate.eng.cam.ac.uk
Group/network shares
Dyson Centre workstations

It is an important password that you must keep safe. Never share your passwords with anyone else.

This password is nothing to do with UIS accounts (Raven, Hermes, Exchange, MCS) or your eduroam token.

If you forget your password contact the IT Helpdesk to ask them to reset it.

If you are having difficulty changing passwords with the instructions on this page, please contact the IT Helpdesk who will be happy to advise.

Selecting a good password

Passwords are case-sensitive, ie. upper and lower case are not equivalent.

In order to be as secure as possible your password should:

Be at least 12 characters in length (the longer the better)
Contain a variety of characters
Not be a common word or name from any language or variations on your name, initials or userid.
Not use obvious substitutions of letters in dictionary words (eg passw0rd, s!mple, s1mple, sin9le)

Changing your password on-site

Changing your password from Windows (Domain PC)

Press Ctrl + Alt + Delete
Click ‘Change a password’
Enter your existing password
Enter your new password twice

Changing your password from a DPO Linux terminal

Right-click on the desktop (not inside an application’s window) and select Open Terminal.
Type passwd
When prompted for ‘Current Password’, enter the same password that you used to login.
You will be prompted for a new password, and then to enter the new password again.

Changing your password from a web browser

Go to https://registration.eng.cam.ac.uk/self-reg/password-reset.php
Login with your UIS/Raven username and password and your multi-factor-authentication token
Enter your new password where prompted

Enter your new password where prompted

Changing your password via ssh connection

You can also use ssh to connect to gate.eng.cam.ac.uk

Log in using your CRSid and your current password
type passwd
When prompted for “Current password”, enter the same password that you used to login.
You will then be prompted for a new password, and then to enter the new password again.
