Launching you smoothly into Departmental IT facilities

You should have two passwords.
- A password for the UIS (University Information Services).
- A password for the Central Department of Engineering System.
You will be prompted to reset the temporary password that was provided to you at the end of the registration process.
If you don’t reset your passwords various facilities (email, printing, etc) will not be available to you. Information on resetting your passwords follows, but it is advisable to check out the short user-friendly UIS video on choosing a memorable and secure password first.
Resetting your password:
- UIS – your initial UIS password will last forever, but you will not be able access important facilities like email if you don’t reset it. There is an online password reset facility at https://password.csx.cam.ac.uk/ You can also check here if you have reset your password, under the “History” tab.
- Central Engineering Department System – your initial Engineering password will last for only a week. See our instructions for changing it. If you haven’t reset your password you will be prompted to do so for a week by email, after which time the password will expire.
The Engineering Department helpdesk can provide help with resetting either password.
IT Facilities Overview
At the Department of Engineering your IT facilities are provided by different teams:
UIS – The Central University Information Service (used throughout the University and colleges).
Engineering Central IT support – Central facilities provided within the Department
Engineering Research IT support – Divisional IT support, provided within your Division. As you are probably aware the Department of Engineering is divided into six research areas, also known as Divisions A-F.
The following guide is designed to get you started. Unless otherwise stated, firstname.lastname@example.org will be your first line of support for the following facilities.
A number of wifi options are shown:
eduroam is the preferred option for almost all users.
UniOfCam we suggest you use this to setup eduroam.
CUED is available to staff and postgraduate students only of the Department of Engineering only. It is for a specific use and has to be applied for separately.
Note: Almost all services (like printing to the Departmental printing system) are available from UIS eduroam sites.
All new users are given an ExchangeOnline email account. You may hear other users talking about Hermes email – this is the old email system, which is due to be decommissioned shortly. You do not have a Hermes email account.

Your Research IT support, PI or manager will be able to provide you with details of your desktop computer/research group server. Your Research IT support should provide you with specific instructions to connect if not covered by the generic Departmental remote access web pages.
File storage and sharing
Some facilities are run by the UIS, and some by the Department, for more information see our overview.
Valuable data should be stored in more than one location
UIS Desktop services
All new staff and visitors are given access to the UIS Desktop Services, so those facilities are available to you. However, when it comes to Desktop Services our default is our own bespoke systems and not those at the UIS. Your Research IT support, will be able to advise you.
There is Departmental directory containing listing of names, offices, phone numbers and email addresses.
To amend your entry contact your administrator or the office who handled your contract:

Printing/copying/scanning in the Department
The main departmental network printing/copying/scanning system is called PaperCut. PaperCut deals with the accounting of printing, scanning, and photocopying.
To print to a PaperCut printer from your own laptop, you need to be within a UIS run eduroam site. There is information online about:
Note: printing in the Department is separate from any college or other University systems (so money put on your college or UIS printing account cannot be used in the Department).
Departmental EPOS (Electronic Point of Sale)
Credit can be loaded onto the EPOS interface. Goods can be purchased using your university card to authenticate. These facilities are only for members of the Department, and covers the following:
- Engineering Department Canteen
- Engineering PaperCut system (for printing and photocopying)
- Facilities in the Dyson Centre
Note, funds may need to be transferred from one facility to another, and are not always reversible.
