Many University resources do not require any additional configuration to be accessible from home. Email (Hermes and Exchange), Moodle, SharePoint, OneDrive, Journals, Camsis, etc. are all accessible using your RAVEN password from any device with an internet connection. For those that need further access to systems not available over the web please see the options below.
General University Access
- If you need access to resources only available when connected to the University network, but not specifically on the Engineering network then you can configure the UIS VPN connection on any work or home computer. See guidance here: https://help.uis.cam.ac.uk/service/network-services/remote-access
Engineering Laptop Users
- If you have a work laptop which you are taking home then you will need to request an Engineering VPN account. Once connected to the VPN you will be able work remotely as if you were onsite. See guidance here: https://help.eng.cam.ac.uk/network/remote-access/vpn/
Home Computer Users
- If you have a desktop computer at work and a personal computer at home then it is recommended that you setup an SSH connection and use the remote desktop application to take control of your office computer from home. You will need to ensure that your office computer is powered on or there is someone onsite that can turn it on for you. See guidance steps here: https://help.eng.cam.ac.uk/network/remote-access/ and attached PDF document.
- If you do not have an office computer to remotely connect to then you can request a VPN account for your personal computer. Please note that if your home computer does not meet security requirements then your request will be rejected. Guidance here: https://help.eng.cam.ac.uk/network/remote-access/vpn/
Please note that the network team is dealing with a high number of VPN requests and we would advise staff to consider the SSH/Remote desktop or University VPN services before making a request for Engineering VPN access.
